Home / Renters Insurance (US + India)
Covers dwelling/contents, liability, and additional living expenses. US homeowners almost always required by lenders; India offers the IRDAI-standard Bharat Griha Raksha policy.
Do it on the official site
US: licensed insurers/agents (flood via NFIP/FEMA). India: IRDAI-licensed general insurers — policyholder.gov.in
- Fees
US home ~$3,548/yr avg ($250k dwelling); US renters ~$22/mo ($30k contents) [confirmed]. India Bharat Griha Raksha from ~₹18/mo (₹5L sum insured) [confirmed] — all vary, get a quote.
- Processing time
Often bound same day; claims days to months
- How long it lasts
US typically 12-month term; India 1–10 years
What to know first
- US lenders require homeowners coverage ≥ loan balance/replacement cost; standard policies exclude flood & earthquake (buy separately).
- US renters: covers your belongings + liability (not the building); liability often starts ~$100k; many leases require proof.
- India Bharat Griha Raksha: building cover auto-includes contents up to 20% (cap ₹10L); tenants can buy contents-only; sum insured = construction cost, not market/land value.
- A lapse → lender 'force-places' a costly policy that protects only the lender.
How to do it
- 1Buy/renew: estimate rebuild/contents value → get ≥3 quotes → choose limits/deductible → bind before closing (US) → give proof to lender → renew annually (often escrowed).
- 2Claim: document damage + inventory, notify promptly, get estimates, work with adjuster/surveyor, receive payment minus deductible.
What you need to bring
- Property address/details, year built, rebuild estimate, prior claims, mortgage/lender info, ID; India: ownership/occupancy proof + contents list.
In person
Insurance agent/broker; licensed contractor (US repairs) / surveyor (India claims)
