What to know first

  • The I-94 — not your visa — sets your authorized stay. Check it after every entry; CBP errors happen and must be fixed.
  • Retrieve/print it free at i94.cbp.dhs.gov (with ~10 years of travel history).
  • To stay past the 'admit until' date, file to extend status (I-539) BEFORE it — overstay = unlawful presence.
  • 'D/S' (students/exchange) has no fixed date — track the I-20/DS-2019 program end + grace instead.
