Motor Insurance (India)

IRDAI-regulated. Third-Party (TP) liability is legally mandatory; Own Damage (OD) and Comprehensive are optional. TP premiums are fixed by IRDAI; OD varies by insurer.

Do it on the official site

Any IRDAI-licensed general insurer (website/app, aggregators, agents, dealer) — irdai.gov.in, policyholder.gov.in

Fees

TP premium is statutory & uniform by engine capacity — e.g. private car ≤1000cc ~₹2,094/yr + 18% GST [confirmed via aggregator citing IRDAI — verify]. OD/Comprehensive vary by IDV/model/location — get a quote.

Processing time

Issuance minutes online; cashless network claims often settle within days of surveyor approval

How long it lasts

TP 1 year (or 3-yr new car / 5-yr new two-wheeler); OD/Comprehensive typically 1 year. NCB grace: 90 days.

What to know first

  • Three types: TP (mandatory, others only, property cap ₹7.5L); OD (your vehicle; can't be standalone without valid TP); Comprehensive (TP + OD + add-ons).
  • New-vehicle rule: a new private CAR needs 3-year TP; a new TWO-WHEELER needs 5-year TP (OD sold annually — the '3+1' structure). (A flat '5-yr TP for cars' is incorrect.)
  • NCB rewards claim-free years (20%→50%) on OD premium; any OD claim resets it unless you bought NCB Protect; 90-day grace after expiry to retain NCB.
  • NCB is transferable to a new car/insurer.

How to do it

  1. 1Get a policy: note vehicle details + IDV → choose TP-only or Comprehensive → quote (TP same everywhere) → declare existing NCB → pay (incl. 18% GST) → instant online issue.
  2. 2Renew: before expiry to keep NCB; if lapsed, within 90 days; inspection may be needed if lapsed.
  3. 3File a claim: inform insurer immediately + note claim # → FIR for accident/theft → surveyor inspects → choose cashless (network garage) or reimbursement → settlement after approval.

What you need to bring

  • Buy/renew: RC, previous policy (NCB transfer), driving licence, IDV/engine-chassis details, KYC. Claim: claim form, policy, RC, DL, FIR (accident/theft), repair estimate + bills, photos.

In person

Nearest cashless network garage; local IRDAI-licensed agent/broker; nearest police station for FIR
