What to know first

  • Requirements vary: NY annual; CA biennial smog (older cars only); TX/FL emissions only in certain metros or not at all.
  • FL has NO statewide safety or emissions inspection for passenger cars.
  • TX eliminated safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles (Jan 1 2025) but emissions still required in ~17 metro counties (Bexar added Nov 1 2026); a $7.50 fee is collected at registration.
  • CA newer cars skip the test but still pay ($20 abatement); station smog prices are set by the station.
